It’s that time of year when unexpected mini heatwaves appear, which is also when office productivity can quickly take a hit. Whilst investing in high-end ventilation systems and air conditioning may seem like the obvious solution, not every business has the budget to go down that road. Fortunately, there are plenty of low-cost, creative ways to beat the heat and keep your team comfortable during those sweltering months. Here are some smart, affordable strategies to cool your workspace.
Make the most of fans
Fans don’t just blow air around, as they can be surprisingly effective when used strategically. Try placing a bowl of ice or a frozen water bottle in front of a desk fan to create a DIY air cooler. Position fans near open windows early in the day to draw in cooler air, and in the afternoon, reverse their direction to push hot air out.
Block the sun
Sunlight streaming through windows can raise indoor temperatures by several degrees. Use blackout blinds, thermal curtains or reflective window film to block direct sunlight and reduce heat buildup. Even cheap stick-on window tint can make a big difference. Don’t forget to close blinds before leaving at the end of the day to prevent a heat trap overnight.
Switch off unused electronics
Computers, printers and monitors all generate heat. Encourage staff to turn off equipment when not in use, especially at lunchtime or during long meetings. Even something as small as unplugging chargers and switching off lights can help reduce the ambient temperature a little, as well as your energy bill.
Encourage light clothing
If your office dress code allows for flexibility, promote lighter, breathable clothing during the summer months. Allowing staff to ditch heavy jackets and trousers for short sleeves and lighter fabrics can make a noticeable difference in comfort and morale.
Rearrange your workspaces
Move desks and workstations away from direct sunlight and heat-emitting appliances. Also, consider rearranging seating so that employees aren’t clustered in the warmest parts of the room. If possible, use cooler parts of the building for meetings or high-focus tasks.
Hydration stations
Staying cool is as much about internal temperature as external. Keep chilled water easily accessible around the office, and consider providing iced herbal teas or fruit-infused water to encourage hydration. You could even add a fun touch with office-wide hydration challenges.
Plants that cool
As well as looking great, indoor plants can help to regulate the temperature and improve air quality. Large-leafed plants like ferns, rubber plants and peace lilies release moisture into the air, providing a natural cooling effect. Group a few together near windows to create a leafy sunshade.
Choose breathable, ergonomic furniture
Chairs with mesh backs or breathable fabric reduce heat buildup in the body compared to leather or vinyl alternatives. Ergonomic furniture also promotes better circulation and posture, which can prevent that sluggish, overheated feeling that sets in after long hours in one position. Investing in lightweight, adjustable seating and desk setups can make a big difference in overall comfort during summer months.
