How to Encourage Workplace Volunteering

A great way to not only enhance workplace morale but also improve collaboration, employee engagement and staff retention is to provide opportunities to volunteer for charitable causes during work hours. There are many ways to do this, which range from offering a paid volunteering day every month/quarter, to organising companywide volunteering projects where staff come together to support their local community.
If you’re not sure which charity to volunteer for, we’ve put together some suggestions for businesses based in Hull, East Yorkshire and around the UK.
SEED
The SEED Eating Disorder Support Service is a Hull-based charity that Merlin Office Supplies supports on an ongoing basis. The organisation’s mission is to create a facility that provides sufferers and carers with confidential, independent and non-judgemental advice and support to ensure they are aided by the best possible network. SEED regularly organises events and challenges that your workplace can get involved in, which can be found here.
Hull 4 Heroes
Another local charity that we’re proud to be involved with is Hull 4 Heroes, which offers a variety of specialist support and employment opportunities to veterans. The charity is also building a Veterans Village, which offers transitional housing, training and support within a self-sustaining community. If you’d like to volunteer for Hull 4 Heroes, check out their fundraising page.
Age UK
Elderly people have so many stories to share, yet they often find themselves without anyone to talk to. That’s why the Age UK Befriender scheme was created, which matches you with a pensioner in your local community. By becoming a friendship volunteer, you can help Age UK to combat loneliness by having regular chats with an OAP either over the phone or face to face.
NHS
The NHS is an organisation that we should all be proud of and support in any way we can. What many people don’t realise is that your local NHS organisations and charities are looking for volunteers to help in multiple areas, ranging from gardening projects to running hospital radio shows. General info can be found here but the best course of action is to visit the website of your local NHS Trust and explore ways to get involved as an individual, a team or a company.
Mind
Mind is a national charity that’s dedicated to ensuring no one has to face a mental health problem alone. The organisation has branches and charity shops all around the UK, so it’s easy to find ways to help them in your local area. Take a look at the Mind website and you’ll see that volunteering opportunities come in all shapes and sizes, from helping out at one of their shops to sharing your stories for them to use in their crucial resources.
